Sony Officially Ends PS Vita Shipments in Japan

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins
Company stated last month that shipments would end soon

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced on Friday that it has officially stopped shipments of the PlayStation Vita handheld console in Japan.

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) had announced last September that production of the PS Vita will halt in Japan this year, and SIE senior vice president Hiroyuki Oda said that the company has no plans for a successor system to the PS Vita.

SIE previously announced last May that it will end production of physical Vita game cards in the Americas and Europe by March 2019.

The PS Vita handheld system launched in Japan on December 17, 2011. The system launched in Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, North and Latin America, Europe and PAL territories, and Singapore by February 22, 2012.

According to Media Create, Sony sold 1,767 PS Vita consoles in Japan during the week of February 11-17, but that number jumped to 3,600 units for the week of February 18-24, after Sony reported that it would halt production of the console in Japan "soon."
