Tokyo Ghoul [:re birth] Smartphone Game Heads West

"Tap combo" RPG features 100 anime characters with 3D models

Bandai Namco Entertainment announced on Tuesday that the Tokyo Ghoul:re invoke smartphone game will launch in the West for iOS and Android this fall. The game will launch as Tokyo Ghoul [:re birth] in the West. The company began streaming an English announcement video for the game.

The game features characters from Tokyo Ghoul, Tokyo Ghoul √A, and Tokyo Ghoul:re, and its anime visuals combine 2D illustrations with 3D models. Players can choose from 100 characters to form teams for the 6-person tap-combo battle system. Players can upgrade their kagune and quinque to get special character abilities and can also gather items to upgrade weapons.

Players take on the fight between humans and ghouls to gain control of Tokyo in Territory Battle mode. The game also includes Strike and Raid battle modes.

The game launched in Japan in March 2017.

The Tokyo Ghoul:re Call to Exist game will launch for the PlayStation 4 in Japan this winter, and it will also have a release for PS4 and PC via Steam in the West. Funimation released the Tokyo Ghoul: Dark War smartphone game earlier this year. Sui Ishida's manga also inspired the 2015 Tokyo Ghoul carnaval∫color smartphone game and the 2015 Tokyo Ghoul Jail PlayStation Vita game.

Ishida serialized Tokyo Ghoul in Shueisha's Weekly Young Jump from 2011 to 2014, and is now serializing Tokyo Ghoul:re. The manga entered its final arc in February and ended on July 5. Shueisha published the manga's 16th compiled volume on July 19. Viz Media is releasing the sequel manga series in North America.

The first season of the Tokyo Ghoul:re anime premiered on April 3. Funimation streamed the series with English subtitles. The company also released the anime's first eight episodes with an English dub alongside those episodes' premieres in Japan, before moving to a two-week delay on the ninth episode. The second season will premiere in October.
