L.A. convention to host original designer of long-running series

The official website for Anime Expo announced on Thursday that Dragon Quest series creator Yuji Horii will be a guest at this year's event. Horii will participate in autograph sessions throughout the weekend. Square Enix is hosting his appearance, along with a playable demo of Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age.

Horii was born in 1954 in Hyogo, Japan, and he won a game programming contest from Enix in 1982. The first Dragon Quest game debuted in 1986. The collective Dragon Quest series has since sold 76 million units worldwide.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age will launch for both PS4 and PC via Steam in North America and Europe on September 4. The game shipped in Japan for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo 3DS on July 29.

This year's Anime Expo will take place at the Los Angeles Convention Center from July 5 to July 8, with a pre-show event on July 4.
