Concept Artists Post Artwork for Rejected Power Rangers Movie

posted on by Eric Stimson
Megazord, Rita, Zordon reimagined

Conceptual artists Alex Ruiz and Gregory Semkow have posted artwork they drew for a rejected Power Rangers film pitch. Ruiz mentions in his post that the inspiration for pursuing another Power Rangers movie was the widely-viewed fan film posted online early in 2015: it "lit the fire under many asses to get a full on Hollywood film made." That film's dark vision of the Power Rangers' future shows in the atmosphere of Ruiz and Semkow's work.

Ruiz also posted this art of a reworked Megazord with the Rangers visible.

Semkow included concept art of Rita Repulsa, the villain from the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series. He envisioned "her body armor as constantly flowing and changing shape around her body, kind of like Rorschachs mask in Watchmen... anyway, kinda fun trying to make power rangers cool..."

Semkow also shared his ideas for Zordon, the Power Rangers' control room, and Alpha.

Ruiz writes that "If you want to be a concept artist, you have to accept that most of what you work on might never be seen and/or made. Many things fail, or get shelved, of indefinitely postponed, usually early on but sometimes even in production... So never stop doing your personal work, because sometimes, THAT is the work that will get you hired on a project like this :)"

The new Power Rangers film is scheduled for release on March 24, 2017.
