This quote means that certain MMOs (FFXIV for example) won't be on XBO still. Square Enix won't allow them to segregate the community (rightly so). This part needs to be removed from the rules or at least have exceptions...but the word "always" should mean no exceptions....

Finally broke down that city wall. Not like they had much choice with the position they're in and all the cross-platform games they keep missing out on.

Funny thing is that's the reason why FF XIV wasn't on Xbox. Now after rejecting SE more than once like they were in a position to miss out on Japanese games when there's so little already and the current state Xbox is in, would SE even think it's worth it now? I wouldn't be surprised if it happened or not though.

It's about time. Pretty dumb that we couldn't even play Windows and XBO or 360 games together despite always touting integration between their PC and console platforms for years that didn't amount to much.

Win10 games are planned to be cross-play going forward anyways, so it makes sense that if such Win10 games are cross-play with the PS4, then it'd be cross-play across those 3 platforms

This wasn't really that surprising considered Phil Spencer announced it at E3 last year; what is surprising is Microsoft's decision to offer it up to cross-play with Playstation and the Wii U, assuming Sony and Nintendo are willing. At this stage, anything else is in the hands of the developers.

We've already lost one title that was planned for cross-platform play in the form of Fable Legends, though, so we're not off to a great start. Hopefully Halo Wars 2 and Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide will compensate for that.

What's more intriguing is the idea of the upgradable console:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016-03-01-it-sounds-like-xbox-one-will-get-hardware-upgrades

  • It sounds like Xbox One will get hardware upgrades - Console to become "backward and forward compatible".

Xbox boss Phil Spencer has hinted that the Xbox One will receive hardware upgrades.

Speaking last week at a Microsoft press event, Spencer likened the Xbox One's future to that of a PC, with upgrades to boost performance.

It's a bold statement - and one which appears to end Microsoft's interest in a console which will remain technically static until the company's next generation box comes around.

"Consoles lock the hardware and the software platforms together at the beginning of the generation. Then you ride the generation out for seven or so years, while other ecosystems are getting better, faster, stronger," Spencer said (thanks, Polygon). "And then you wait for the next big step function.

"When you look at the console space, I believe we will see more hardware innovation in the console space than we've ever seen. You'll actually see us come out with new hardware capability during a generation allowing the same games to run backward and forward compatible because we have a Universal Windows Application running on top of the Universal Windows Platform that allows us to focus more and more on hardware innovation without invalidating the games that run on that platform.

"We can effectively feel a little bit more like we see on PC, where I can still go back and run my old Doom and Quake games that I used to play years ago but I can still see the best 4K games come out and my library is always with me. Hardware innovation continues while the software innovation is able to take advantage and I don't have to jump a generation and lose everything that I played on before."

Microsoft is due to bring Universal Windows Apps to Xbox One in the not-too-distant future.

The idea that games and apps will be supported on Windows 10 devices and Xbox One consoles is not new, but the suggestion that Xbox One may be around for a long while - and kept up to date via hardware upgrades is pretty groundbreaking.

Doesn't upgradable hardware violate the number one advantage of consoles? There seems to be little point if you still have to start installing drivers and worrying about if your setup meets the requirements; multimedia computers aren't exactly difficult to build and can easily be setup for full DVR functionality, playing any file type you wish, etc.

They aren't so much making the console better as nuking their raison d'etre - which sounds like Microsoft these days. It'll probably start forcing Windows 10 on people's TVs in the near future, too.

It'll probably be more like how Apple PCs can be upgraded but quite limited in options. It won't be like the wild wild west of anything goes Windows PCs.

For example, people won't have choices except whether to upgrade or not. If ya want to upgrade, here's the part that's approved and tested, just plug it in and that's it - ya don't have a decision to choose another type. So that even people who can't or don't want to be bothered with computer upgrading, can still upgrade their consoles without a cinch.

Console manufacturers can also create rules for developers that their games must either work with the console at its most basic or provide clear indicators that they won't. This was what Nintendo did with the Wii, for instance: The Wii Remote eventually got upgraded to the Wii Motion Plus, along with new peripherals to attach onto the Wii Remote. But Nintendo allowed only games to work with the Wii Remote by itself, or at most, Wii Remotes ands one Nunchuk, with games that require Wii Motion Plus to either come bundled with one (like The Legend of Zelda:Skyward Sword or Wii Sports Resort) or say so on the packaging (though I can't recall any)

Whoa, they're going to try to work with Nintendo for cross-platform games too? There aren't that many, but that'd be interesting. And it'd be more likely than one might think, as post-Xbox Microsoft and Nintendo have worked together in the past, like continuing to release Rareware games on Nintendo handhelds.

This is REALLY going to get those kids on YouTube clamoring for Super Smash Bros. and other Nintendo multiplayer games on other systems though.
