As much as I have loved the Kingdom Hearts games the story is so damn convoluted and confusing. spoiler[I thought Terra was Ansem being possessed by him and that Axel gained his own keyblade ] So much other stuff with the story make this one of the hardest to follow storylines in all game history.

^ Story is easy to understand. Then again, I read the Ansem/Xehanort reports, the ultimania's, and Nomura's interviews.

I think you had the first part backwards. spoiler[Xehanort (Ansem) possessed Terra, he wasn't possessed by him. And anyone can wield a Keyblade through proper training (though there's a theory going around that the main reason Axel got his Keyblade in KH3D is because, when he saved Sora from being infested by Xehanort's heart, he accidentally became infested himself. Maybe he'll give into the darkness and get taken over by Xehanort too? His reunion with Saix seems like good leverage...)] |

Kingdom Hearts is actually fairly easy to understand for the most part if not the entirety of the four most import games. Those being Kingdom Hearts, KH Chain of Memories, KH2, and Kingdom Hearts birth by sleep (this one can get a little confusing at the end but you probably aren't supposed to fully understand it).
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 days left me with some questions but honestly they didn't matter and the story is easy to understand even if it is dragged out. Kingdom Hearts Recode is just plan skip able and confusing and really has no reason for existence in the story, especially since it makes little to no sense what so ever. And then you have Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance......Yay this game seems like it should be important but honestly I can barely understand anything in it and it just made me feel like the series was purposely trying to upset me at times for no reason. The story starts out simple enough and I think I understood some of the major plot twist but honestly it just made me really confused if it was in soras side of the story, rikus I could understand for the most part. |

"Now in Development." Dammit. Well, at least it's not like "Persona 5" where they keep promising us release dates only to delay it. Winter 2014? Nope, delayed. Fall 2015? Nope, delayed. Summer 2016? You better believe it will get delayed.

I won't blame people who don't like the complexity in the way it's expressed in KH. It's full of conceptual physics and magic--stuff that some people just don't like. And each side iteration simply adds to the complexity rather than simply concluding the story as the first two main titles did with their low game-count. People are scared that KHIII will add to the confusion rather than quell it. It... could. Or maybe it'll give us a real conclusion with only a minor tease like the endings of KHI and II.
I personally love this kind of roller-coaster world building. It keeps me on my toes and has me speculating constantly. It gives me reason to revisit entrees (gameplay alone rarely ever interests me) and I have a lot of fondness for the characters. DDD was crazy and mind-boggling, but as long as you take the creators' word for it (I'm not saying to shut your brain off--just trust that what hasn't been said yet will be said and work in KHIII), it's still quite a rewarding experience. It's a wonderful full-length game with a long prologue-esc story to lead into KHIII. I liked it a lot. As for the trailers themselves, I... don't know if I like how a few of the characters look in this new style (Mickey...). I mean, it's not drastically different, but the engines particular quirks sorta show through in a jarring way. If this is what it will look like in the end, I hope it's easy to get used to, at least. |
