Hard for me to get excited about this with how bad Assault Girls was. This trailer also looks kinda campy.

I kind of wanted to see this but unfortunately it's screen time clashed with 'The Taking of Tiger Mountain' at this past weeks NYAFF.

I actually saw Assault Girls, and I was like what a beautiful mess that was. Look I know Mamoru Oshii is a big man who could bring forth lighting bolts from the heavens dare you criticize his work, because let's be honest here he's got me beat. But I still have the right to say that I'm not that impressed with the films I have seen by him.

It's perfectly normal to not be excited about a live-action Oshii movie. Even Avalon, which is considered the best of his LA work, was still just okay, well below virtually all of his animated movies.

My reaction to any LA Oshii is just to say "THIS is why we've given up expecting another Ghost in the Shell or Patlabor", and hold on tighter to my CPM DVD of Beautiful Dreamer.

In case you forgot Mamoru Oshii is a military geek.

Either Assault Girls was Oshii's worst movie--or a most brilliant self-parody. I can't help but feel like it must have been, to have been chock full of all the classic Oshii tropes (atmospheric montage included) and yet amount to amusing pointlessness, and the blunt "ending" exemplified that. Maybe it wasn't the intention, but looking at it this way I've come to better appreciate it and helped me decide to keep the blu-ray.

Having said that, strange-looking as this movie does, I remain interested in Oshii's films and withholding judgement until I see it. And having said that--when the heck is Garm Wars getting its blu-ray release, in Japan or anywhere? That one I truly want to check out already.

Give us a Kerberos movie, Oshii. Or at least a Jin-roh live action remake.
