They said that four was an alternate reality. So their are two alternate timelines, and this will probably be the alternate reality from the first three games.

I member some confusion years ago about this due to the way SO3 effectively killed the series, so there cannot be a sequel to SO3, but nope Star Ocean 4 is the prequel to all the series, its the beginning of it all, the earliest in the timeline while Star Ocean 3 ended the series.
Check the video, is clearly show you they are the same universe and all connected.
Star Ocean 5 takes place between star ocean 2 and star ocean 3.
Like I mentioned in the last discussion about this, the universe is infinite, there are countless planets, countless remote places with a story to be told at any point in time. The series can go on for many more installments without issue.
I hope it can regain the spirit of star ocean 2, the best in the series.

Well, ANN is fairly late on this news. It got out around midday my time actually. Granted, I only really learned this quick because I was hanging around the Gamefaqs board for SO4 helping out a player since I just finished a post game run myself...
Common reaction: Holy S... It's real!
Frankly I am utterly shocked by this (and so are a lot of other players) because of all the factors combined that pretty much spoke against it. Even when signs were thickening yesterday, most of us figured it would either be a hoax or a mobile (because Tri-Ace just got bought by such a company). That it actually is a console game for BOTH PS4 and PS3 (yeah, me!) and still developed by Tri-Ace is something I'd call a minor (maybe even a major) miracle.

and they said SOTLH is the last game.
"no more star ocean"
anyway, this is great news. I like JRPGs
Persona 5 and Star ocean 5?
I guess i can keep my PS3 for a bit longer
the PS4 is doing well so JRPGs are returning to Playstation
now bring back
Suikoden
Wild Arms
Shadow Hearts
Dark Cloud
Grandia
Shin Megami Tensei (other than persona)
etc..

Star Ocean is one of my favorite JRPGs, so this news is tremendously exciting!

Though there's only so much mileage one can get out of hopping around the timeline and universe (especially since the series ALWAYS has Earth involved in one way or another). I do wonder when they're just going to bite the bullet and address the whole 4D beings thing.
Anyway, have to say I'm surprised at this as I thought tri-Ace were onto other things after SO4 was supposed to be the final entry (though it seems that EVERY entry was made with the intent of it possibly being the last). The thing about the series as a whole is that it has the ingredients of something even bigger. 1 and 2 have the least amount of issues in terms of gameplay and story, but also pale in the highs of SO3 and 4. 3 had great IDEAS for item crafting with the Patent system and Inventors, but it took investments so huge that you really couldn't even touch the concept before the end-game due it being so expensive and unwieldy. SO4 had the best gameplay in terms of combat, but its crafting system seemed a bit too simplified and the plot was by far the weakest of the series. If tri-Ace actually managed to put in all the good elements of the previous entries they could have something insane.
