I legit don't get this, at that price you are better buying a cheap Steam Deck, which can both stream the PS5 and run your not heavy Steam library.

Remote play was a neat feature for PSP-PS3 and PS Vita-PS4, but those were their own systems with their own games. This isn't truly a portable system since it needs to be within range of the PS5, and plays no games of its own. There are already devices that let you do the same with your phone, or even the Steam Deck.

The use scenario for this seems so narrow. You'd have to be in a situation where you have a PS5, but consistently have someone else using the TV, and also want things like the adaptive triggers and haptics so much that the cheaper alternatives won't do.

The name for it kind of bothers me. While I get that the Portal name is meant to denote that this is your "portal" to a PS5, it sounds enough like "Portable" that I could see less informed customers thinking this is a new PSP.

They would have been better off if they had kept with the Vita when it was doing poorly early on, that would have for a solid gaming device had they put more effort into it.

Sony: Makes stream-only handheld.

Sony: Makes it so that it can only stream locally from console you already own and can't directly stream games from streaming games service.

WHO IS THIS FOR

Also, Sony: $200 local streaming device.

You’re better off with a Steam Deck or OLED Switch. Hell, you’re better off strapping your phone to that Bluetooth PS5 controller and playing remote that way.

Congrats Sony, you've just reinvented the Wii U gamepad!

I genuinely do not understand why this exists or why anyone would buy it. $200 is the same price as a Switch Lite...y'know, a full-fledged honest-to-God portable console you can play anywhere. $100 more gets you a normal Switch, and $100 after that is a freaking Steam Deck.

Pfft, 200$ is literally the price of the new Switch Lite (and heck, PS Portal doesn't even have OLED screen either) - and unlike this abomination of Dualsense with a cheap Android tablet, it can run nearly every possible game from it's library without the need of actual streaming.

I thought they'd price it far higher to be honest, so this is a pleasant surprise. Still doesn't change the fact that I don't see the appeal of getting one, especially when the current controller is prone to stick drift

Wow Sony... really? What's the point of this? If you can't play on the TV your PS5 is already plugged into for what ever reason, just plug it into a different one.

Well yeah provided you have steam which unless you’re a PC gamer you’re not going to have.

Yeah because we all live in households with multiple unused TVs. As you may recall this very thing was one of selling points of the original switch.

With hardly any support from them or third parties not really.

I've seen some comments like this elsewhere, and it's hard to argue with it. A smaller tv for less that $200 isn't hard to find, and the right sales will get you within that range for something 40" or more.

Been talking about this for month since it started being speculated and my opinion remains the same: this will crash and burn rigorously and Sony will only gave themselves to blame. All everyone has been asking for was a legit successor to the PS Vita (you know, an actual portable console). That literally it. Smh.
